Organizations That Have Skipped The Plastic Straw

Thank you to all the organizations below for joining my campaign and Skipping the Plastic Straw. Since my campaign launched in 2018, I've managed to convince five school districts (245 schools), an outdoor science institute and a major healthcare system in Orange County, California USA to keep 15 millions straws out of circulation each year! Where: Entire campus at PALI

What is the change: Removed plastic straw stirrers

Newport-Mesa Unified School District

Date joined: July 2018

Where: Cafeterias in all 32 schools in the district

What is the change: Removed plastic straws from cutlery packets for entire district and offer paper straws on request. 

Number of straws kept out of the ocean: 10,000 a day or 1.8 million a year!

Saddleback Valley Unified School District

Date joined: August 2018

Where: Cafeterias in all 34 schools in the district

What is the change: Removed plastic straws from cutlery packets for entire district and offer paper straws on request at staff cafeterias. 

Number of straws kept out of the ocean: 10,000 a day or 1.8 million a year!

Date joined: February 2019

Where: Cafeterias in all 62 schools in the district

What is the change: Removed plastic straws in entire district. 

Number of straws kept out of the ocean: 20,000 a day or 3.5 million a year!

Where: Cafeterias in two hospitals in Irvine and Newport Beach, Orange County, CA.

What is the change: Removed plastic straws from cafeterias and offer paper straws on request.

Number of straws kept out of the ocean: 1 million straws a year!

Where: Cafeterias in all 72 schools in the district. 

What is the change: Removed plastic straws from the entire school district. 

Number of straws kept out of the ocean: 22,500 per day or 4 million straws a year!

Project aware

Partnership: Jointly send out letters to restaurants in Coastal communities asking them to switch from plastic straws to paper straws.

OCEAN HEROES BOOTCAMP

Years attended Bootcamp: 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021

Where: Attended all four Ocean Heroes Bootcamps in New Orleans 2018, Vancouver 2019, Virtual 2020 and Virtual 2021.

What is Ocean Heroes Bootcamp: It is a program, organized by Captain Planet Foundation and Lonely Whale, that empowers young people (ages 11-18) with tools, skills, and network to create their own campaigns to help beat plastic pollution.
